Introduction

The Forestry Commission is looking for an enthusiastic and motivated Regulatory and Incentives Support Officer to join the team based at Alice Holt Forest, Farnham, Surrey.

England's trees and woodlands are valuable natural assets. They provide homes for wildlife, store carbon, improve water quality, reduce flooding, support rural communities and create spaces where people can connect with nature.

In this role, you'll help protect existing woodlands, encourage the creation of new forests, and support landowners and communities in caring for the landscapes they manage.

No two days are the same. You may visit woodland owners to discuss habitat improvement projects, help tackle threats such as tree diseases, invasive pests and deer damage, or support work addressing climate-related challenges.

Key Duties / Key Responsibilities

Help Create New Woodlands

• Support the development of new woodland creation projects.

• Work with landowners and forestry professionals to identify opportunities for planting trees and enhancing natural habitats.

• Promote the environmental and economic benefits that woodlands bring to communities and businesses.

• Assist in delivering grants and incentives that encourage sustainable woodland creation.

Protect England's Trees

• Help ensure woodlands are managed responsibly and sustainably.

• Support the implementation of forestry regulations that protect valuable habitats and landscapes.

• Work alongside experts to safeguard woodland ecosystems and species.

Improve Woodland Resilience

• Encourage active woodland management that benefits wildlife and the environment.

• Support responses to tree pests and diseases such as ash dieback and Phytophthora.

• Help woodland owners adapt forests to the challenges of a changing climate.

• Promote practices that strengthen biodiversity and long-term woodland health.

Connect With People Who Care About Nature

• Build positive relationships with woodland owners, land managers, local communities and environmental organisations.

• Represent the Forestry Commission at events, shows and community engagement activities.

• Inspire others to recognise the value of trees and the important role they play in our landscapes and daily lives.

Requirements

Essential

• Excellent communication skills and confidence engaging with the public and stakeholders.

• The ability to organise and manage multiple priorities.

• A proactive, self-motivated approach to work.

• Confidence using Microsoft Office and digital systems.

• A full UK driving licence.

Knowledge or Experience

• Knowledge or experience of forestry, woodland management, conservation, countryside management, agriculture, ecology or environmental land management.

Desirable

• Experience in forestry legislation.

• Experience in woodland grants.

• Experience in plant health.

• Experience in environmental schemes.
