Leading recruitment company Acorn by Synergie has strengthened its construction division with the appointment of former professional rugby player and Welsh Guards’ sergeant Matt Dwyer as a Client Relationship Manager.

Matt's primary focus will be building and maintaining strong relationships with new and existing clients, working with businesses ranging from sole traders to senior business leaders across the construction sector.

Newport-born Matt brings more than a decade of construction experience to the role, having previously run his own landscaping business before becoming Operations Manager at EcoVigour in Chepstow. He then spent four years with Kingsley Build, further developing his expertise within the industry.

Alongside his construction career, Matt enjoyed an outstanding sporting and military career. He served as a sergeant in the Welsh Guards, captained the Army rugby team, led the Combined Services team featuring the best players from the Army, Royal Navy and RAF, and also represented the Barbarians and World XV.

On the professional rugby field, he played for Worcester Warriors, Bridgend RFC, Ospreys and Merthyr RFC before finishing his playing career with Newport RFC.

Speaking about his new role, Matt said: "It's been a great first few weeks. I'm enjoying it, it's a bit different to what I'm used to. So, I'm learning loads and finding my feet a bit but it's all going well.

He added: "A lot of ex-military go into construction because it's robust, hands-on and us ex-military people take instruction easily. It's an out-on-the-field kind of job.

"I've come from a changing room and battlefield into an office environment, which is quite a daunting change, but I'm out and about a lot meeting new people, which is perfect for me.

"I'm looking forward to building long-term relationships with businesses across the construction sector, understanding what they need and becoming someone they can rely on. If I can help clients find the right people while supporting candidates into great opportunities, I'll know I'm making a difference."
